For Nigerian born disc jockey based in America, DJ Don X, one of the secrets to becoming a successful DJ is to target the women during gigs and everyone would have a good time.

He told Saturday Beats, “As a DJ, it is always a good plan to target the ladies having fun at your party because if they dance, the guys would dance as well and everybody would have a good time.”

However, he was quick to correct the generic notion that DJs are ladies’ men, adding that being a DJ is a job just like every other white collar job.

“To be honest, I think it is a misconception to think that every DJ is a Casanova or a ladies’ man. Of course, That could apply to some of them, but you would be surprised about how many DJ who do not have that persona. I think it is a misconception to think DJs are womanisers,” he said.

Giving an insight into his private life, the DJ told Saturday Beats that despite the late nights he keeps, he has only one woman in his life who he hopes to walk down the aisle. “Right now, I am in a very serious relationship and my partner is a very understanding person.

It takes a very understanding woman to stay with a DJ. Luckily for me, she is not really the type that likes going to the club. Even though I am a DJ, I am a very private person and she is the same way that I am,” Don X said.

The America-based deejay told Saturday Beats that in the near future, Nigerian DJs would be earning as much as musicians just like it is happening abroad. “We need to understand that it is only in Nigeria or Africa that DJs do not earn as much as musicians and that is a changing culture.

Artistes in Nigeria are earning more than most disc jockeys but that is changing because around the world, some DJs are earning as much as $60m a year. That is my target. With the right type of gig and brand, I see DJs in the near future earning more than individual artistes. An artiste’s income is based on how well received his last song was but as a DJ, you would get paid per gig and your audience would always be there to love you.

It is just based on how good you are and how much time you dedicate to your craft. As far as fame and fortune goes, DJs are on track to earn as much as the highest paid musician or more at this rate,” he said.

Speaking on why he decided to become a disc jockey, Don X, said that it was out of passion and also realising that the job had a longer lifespan than being a musician. Don X said, “As far as being a disc jockey is concerned, I would say that the profession chose me; it may sound weird but I really did not wake up and decide to become a DJ.

I am very passionate about my craft and I think there is longevity in this profession as opposed to being an artiste. As a DJ, you can still claim to be an artiste because you would be able to create music and connect with the crowd the way musicians do.

To be honest, a DJ is a musician because you are able to play your work and other people’s as well with the opportunity of making it better by creating a remix of the songs. In that sense, I think creativity wise; I picked being a disc jockey over being a regular musician because DJs are actually more creative.”
